Marital status datasets

World Countries

UN World Marriage Data 2012
World Marriage Data 2012 provides a comparable and up-to-date set of national data on the marital status of the population by age and sex for 221 countries and areas of the world. The dataset has limitations. We have used the most recent data available.
Age groups: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65+

For the population and BMI datasets there are in some cases a mismatch between the age groups of a dataset and the age ranges selectable with our age range selector. For instance, you can select the age range 30-34. In the German dataset there is no 30-34 age group available, but there is a 30-39 age group. In such cases we assume an equal contribution from each year of the available data.

Height statistics

Wikipedia article: Human height
For some countries multiple figures are given for average height. The preferred choice of data was when the height was measured by others as opposed to being self-reported, and when the subjects were in their twenties.

Jaume Garcia: The Evolution of Adult Height in Europe
From here we use Standard Deviation (SD) in height. The SDs we use are 7.0 cm for men, and 6.1 cm for women.

Height statistics are not available for all countries. For each country with missing height we have estimated heights as an average of values from surrounding countries, or its continent.

Body Mass Index statistics

Estimates for mean and SD for BMI on year, age and country levels are done using data for overweight (BMI >= 25) and obesity (BMI >= 30) from:
Global Burden of Disease Study 2013. Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 (GBD 2013) Obesity Prevalence 1990-2013. Seattle, United States: Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), 2014. This database is made available under the Open Data Commons Attribution License: http://opendatacommons.org/licenses/by/
Age groups: 15-19,20-24, 25-29,30-34, 35-39,40-44, 45-49,50-54, 55-59,60-64,65-69

Country filtering statistics

These statistics are not available for all countries. For each country with missing statistics we have estimated values as an average of the values from surrounding countries, or its continent.

Living cost

We use Numbeo's Consumer Price Index by Country as the basis of our Living Costs estimations.

Buying Power local salary

We use Numbeo's Local Purchasing Power Index to estimate how much goods and services local people can afford for their salary.

Democracy level

The Democracy Index is an index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, that measures the state of democracy in 167 countries.

Gender equality

As an indicator of women's position in various countries we facilitate the inverted Gender Inequality Index, created by the United Nations Development Programme. The index uses three dimensions to do so: reproductive health, empowerment, and labor market participation.

Lack of pollution level

We use Numbeo's inverted Pollution Index for Country as the basis for our Lack of pollution slider.

Safety level

We again rely on Numbeo, this time we use the inverted Crime Index for Country as the basis for our Safety level slider.

English speaking level

A Wikipedia article lists the estimated percentage of people who speaks English in many countries.

Life expectancy

We use WHO's Overall life expectancy for our Life expectancy slder. The figures reflect the quality of healthcare in the countries listed as well as other factors including ongoing wars, obesity, and HIV infections.

Education level

One of the components of the Human Development Index published by United Nations is the Education Index. It is calculated from the Mean years of schooling index and the Expected years of schooling index. This number is what we use for quantifying the education level.

Other components

Polygons shaped around countries come from Cultural Vectors map data from the Natural Earth dataset.
Polygons shaped around US Zip Code Tabulation Areas are by US Census Bureau.
Polygons shaped around British Census Merged Wards Areas are by Office for National Statistics.
