This website is an attempt to help people looking for a partner take informed decisions on where to look.

In this work several datasets have been facilitated.

Age group mismatch

Important: For the population, ethnic, education and BMI datasets there is in some cases a mismatch between the age groups of a dataset and the age ranges selectable with our age range selector. For instance, you can select the age range 30-34. In the German dataset there is no 30-34 age group available, but there is a 30-39 age group. Likewise, for the US educational attainment dataset there is no 18-19 age group, but there is a 18-24 age group.

In such cases we assume an equal contribution from each year of the available data. To get the same numbers as given in the original datasets, stick to lower and upper boundaries aligned with the original dataset applied. Which age groups the various datasets contain is given below.

Height statistics

Wikipedia article: Human height
For some countries multiple figures are given for average height. The preferred choice of data was when the height was measured by others as opposed to being self-reported, and when the subjects were in their twenties.

Jaume Garcia: The Evolution of Adult Height in Europe
From here we use Standard Deviation (SD) in height. The SDs we use are 7.0 cm for men, and 6.1 cm for women.

Height statistics are not available for all countries. For each country with missing height we have estimated heights as an average of values from surrounding countries, or its continent.

Height varies by age, domestic location, among ethnisities, levels of educational attainment and types of marital status. We do not attempt to reflect these differences in the numbers given, but use the estimate for the distribution of national gender based height.

Body Mass Index statistics

Gender-dependent estimates for overweight (BMI >= 25) and obesity (BMI >= 30) are from:

Countries: Global Burden of Disease Study 2013. Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 (GBD 2013) Obesity Prevalence 1990-2013. Seattle, United States: Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), 2014.

Age groups: 15-19,20-24, 25-29,30-34, 35-39,40-44, 45-49,50-54, 55-59,60-64,65-69

USA: Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). US Health Map. Seattle, WA: IHME, University of Washington, 2015. Available from http://vizhub.healthdata.org/us-health-map. (Accessed 30/08/2015). Using county level estimates for BMI >= 30 for 2011. Estimates for BMI >= 25 are based on these numbers. This dataset does not have numbers for different age groups. We therefore superimpose the Global dataset on top of this to present age-dependent estimates for USA. When moving through time for US locations, an equal development throughout the country is assumed. This is not optimal, since for instance Colorado during the 1990-2013 period had a rather modest BMI-increase, while it was considerably higher in Mississippi.

BMI has been shown to vary among ethnisities, levels of educational attainment and types of marital status. We now attempt to reflect differences in ethnisity and education. The figures are extrapolated to adjust for age and location.

Source for ethnicity obesities levels are: Ogden CL, Carroll MD, Fryar CD, Flegal KM. Prevalence of obesity among adults and youth: United States, 2011–2014. NCHS data brief, no 219. Hyattsville, MD: National Center for Health Statistics. 2015.

Source for educational attainment obesities levels are: Ogden CL, Lamb MM, Carroll MD, Flegal KM. Obesity and socioeconomic status in adults: United States 1988–1994 and 2005–2008. NCHS data brief no 50. Hyattsville, MD: National Center for Health Statistics. 2010.

Country filtering statistics

These statistics are not available for all countries. For each country with missing statistics we have estimated values as an average of the values from surrounding countries, or its continent.

Living cost

We use Numbeo's Consumer Price Index by Country as the basis of our Living Costs estimations.

Buying Power local salary

We use Numbeo's Local Purchasing Power Index to estimate how much goods and services local people can afford for their salary.

Democracy level

The Democracy Index is an index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, that measures the state of democracy in 167 countries.

Gender equality

As an indicator of women's position in various countries we facilitate the inverted Gender Inequality Index, created by the United Nations Development Programme. The index uses three dimensions to do so: reproductive health, empowerment, and labor market participation.

Lack of pollution level

We use Numbeo's inverted Pollution Index for Country as the basis for our Lack of pollution slider.

Safety level

We again rely on Numbeo, this time we use the inverted Crime Index for Country as the basis for our Safety level slider.

English speaking level

A Wikipedia article lists the estimated percentage of people who speaks English in many countries.

Life expectancy

We use WHO's Overall life expectancy for our Life expectancy slder. The figures reflect the quality of healthcare in the countries listed as well as other factors including ongoing wars, obesity, and HIV infections.

Education level

One of the components of the Human Development Index published by United Nations is the Education Index. It is calculated from the Mean years of schooling index and the Expected years of schooling index. This number is what we use for quantifying the education level.
